But the position must be one of preparedness to accept aspects that are not good, as much as aspects that may be beneficial. And yet both were put down by personal and vested interests, and extremely valuable advances in potential new ways of healing, probably to the detriment of generations of people. CBT is a time-limited form of treatment, usually lasting from 10-20 sessions, depending on the presenting issues and concerns. CBT is as effective as medication for mild to moderately severe cases, in the short-run, and in the long-run, CBT has been shown to maintain an individual's gains and therefore, reduce the risk of relapse or recurrence. While the research is inconclusive regarding the combined effects of medication and CBT, over and above either form of treatment, it is not uncommon for treatment to include both components. Not everyone benefits from CBT, therefore, an in-depth assessment is conducted in order to evaluate whether an individual is likely to benefit from this approach. During your initial assessment at our clinic, you may wish to discuss the appropriateness of CBT for your presenting concerns with the assessing clinician. A recent World Health Organization report warns of the escalating global burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), projecting that it will become the major worldwide cause of death and disability by 2020. In the Western Cape region of South Africa, ischemic disease is already the leading cause of death, often killing by acute myocardial infarction. African black population from the heart of Soweto study presents a high prevalence of risk factors for atherosclerotic disease including diabetes but overall, ischemic heart disease apparently remains fairly uncommon compared with the other South African ethnic groups. This relative protective effect may be related to the rarity of hypercholesterolemia in the African black population as they may have a higher level of high density lipoprotein (HDL) relative to low density lipoprotein (LDL) than non-black South Africans. Summer Enrichment Trips

Each year graduating AWOL youth participants and families are invited to attend a special summer youth enrichment trip. AWOL prides itself on giving youth opportunities to explore the world outside of their community. Past trips have included the Brave New Voices Competition in San Francisco, CA and Washington, DC as well as trips to Montgomery, Alabama to participate in the Alabama State University Summer Theater Camp. These trips require a significant amount of fundraising and are not covered by our regular program and activity fees. If invited to participate, parents will be required to support 100% of the cost associated with the trip. The average cost associated with our summer trips is $350-$500 dollar per youth. Parents will be given ample time to decide whether or not to participate as well as offered an extended payment plan to cover the cost of the trip in smaller more manageable payments.

Financial Assistance Request

We realize that parents have many financial obligations. In the event that a parent needs help we are willing to take Hardship Request on a case-by-case basis. Scholarships funds are limited to only those who are experiencing severe financial difficulty. Financial hardship request will not be considered for the summer enrichment trip activities.
